What image sizes should I use on social media in 2026?

Illustration of social media image frames in square, portrait, landscape and vertical sizes with safe-zone guides

A cropped face or a cut-off headline makes a good post look careless. The short answer: design feed posts at 1080 × 1350 px (4:5), stories, reels and shorts at 1080 × 1920 px (9:16), and link previews at 1200 × 630 px. Those three sizes work on almost every platform. The table below covers the rest.

Key takeaways

  • Portrait 4:5 at 1080 × 1350 px is the safest feed size on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Threads.
  • Vertical video everywhere is 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). Keep text away from the top, bottom and right edge.
  • Since January 2025, Instagram’s profile grid shows 3:4 tiles, so 1080 × 1440 px fills a tile exactly.
  • Your website’s link preview image (og:image) should be 1200 × 630 px.

What is an aspect ratio?

An aspect ratio is an image’s width compared with its height. 1:1 is square, 4:5 is slightly taller than wide, 9:16 is a full phone screen, and 16:9 is a widescreen video. Platforms care about the ratio more than the exact pixels, so a 2160 × 2700 image works anywhere a 1080 × 1350 image does.

Platform by platform

Facebook

Use 4:5 portrait for feed posts and 851 × 315 px for the page cover. Facebook recommends a cover of at least 399 × 150 px, saved as an sRGB JPG under 100 KB, or a PNG if it has a logo or text. Link previews look best at 1200 × 630 px, with an 8 MB limit.

Instagram

Post at 1080 × 1350 px (4:5), or 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) if you want the grid tile filled. Instagram shows images up to 1080 px wide. In a carousel, every slide is cropped to the ratio of the first one, so design them all at the same size.

LinkedIn

Personal covers are 1584 × 396 px; company page covers are 1128 × 191 px. Portrait and square images take up the most space in the feed. Link previews use 1200 × 627 px (1.91:1).

X (formerly Twitter)

The profile photo is 400 × 400 px and the header 1500 × 500 px, both 2 MB at most. X may crop up to 60 px from the top and bottom of the header, so keep text in the middle. Posts take up to four images.

TikTok

Everything is vertical: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) for both video and photo posts. Buttons cover the right side and captions cover the bottom, so keep faces and text in the centre.

YouTube

Thumbnails are 16:9, at least 640 px wide, and 1280 × 720 px is the usual choice. The channel banner is 2560 × 1440 px (6 MB max), but only the central 1235 × 338 px is safe on every device, so put your logo and text there. Shorts are 1080 × 1920 px.

Pinterest

Pins are 2:3, and Pinterest recommends 1000 × 1500 px. Files can be up to 20 MB on desktop and 32 MB in the app. Pinterest suggests sRGB PNG files for the sharpest result.

Threads

Threads accepts images from 320 to 1440 px wide, up to 8 MB. Portrait 4:5 or 3:4 works best. Carousels can hold up to 20 items, and videos can run up to 5 minutes.

Bluesky

Posts take up to four images of 2 MB each. Avatars and banners are limited to 1 MB, so compress a 3000 × 1000 px banner before uploading.

Safe zones for vertical video

Keep text and faces inside the middle of a 9:16 frame. On TikTok, Reels and Shorts, the top shows the account name, the bottom shows the caption, and the right side has like and share buttons. A simple rule: leave about 250 px clear at the top and bottom and about 150 px on the right.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

  • Instagram: in January 2025 the profile grid switched from squares to 3:4 rectangles. Square posts now show with their sides cropped on the grid.
  • YouTube: thumbnails can now be up to 3840 × 2160 px and 50 MB on desktop. Vertical videos get an automatic 4:5 thumbnail on the home feed.
  • Bluesky: the image limit per file went up from 1 MB to 2 MB.
  • Threads: carousels now hold up to 20 items.

Common misconception: many people think each platform needs its own design. In fact, three masters (4:5, 9:16 and 1.91:1) cover nearly everything. Resize from those instead of starting from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

1080 × 1350 px (4:5) for feed posts. It works on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Threads and X, and takes up more screen space than a square.

Since 2025 the grid shows 3:4 tiles. Square posts lose their sides and 4:5 posts lose a little at the top and bottom. Post at 1080 × 1440 px to fill the tile, or pick a custom grid crop when you publish.

1200 × 630 px, set as the og:image tag on each page. Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Threads and messaging apps all use it when someone shares your link.

Only in the same ratio and within the file size limit. Platforms compress large files, and a heavy image can come out softer than one uploaded at the recommended size.
